Renovated in Fáskrúðsfjörður as a hotel

The Franski spítalinn (" French hospital ") was built in 1903 in the place Búðir in the east fjords of Iceland .

history

French fishermen have been coming to Iceland to catch cod since the 17th century . At the time of the First World War , this fishery came to a standstill and has not recovered. The hospital started operations in 1904. After the hospital was no longer needed, it was transported to Hafnarnes on the south bank of Fáskrúðsfjörður near the lighthouse. Here it served as a community center, residential building for five families and as a kindergarten. It was used until 1964 and then stood empty for almost half a century.

In 2011 the house was transported back to the place where it was built. It is now called Fáskrúðsfjörður like the fjord. Here it was renovated and now serves as a hotel, which also houses an exhibition about its original use.

At the beginning of the 20th century there were other hospitals in Ísland, which were built by the French state for its fishermen. The others were:

  • in Reykjavík on Lindargata and Frakkarstígur, later a school was located in the building
  • on Vestmannaeyjar , Kirkjuvegur, the building is now called Gamli or Gamló
  • in Grundarkampur the earlier settlement of Grundarfjörður , was demolished around 1860.
