Perino was named Vaga after his teacher, the Florentine painter Vaga. In Rome he became Raphael's pupil and, based on his drawings, carried out stucco and decorative paintings in the loggias and other rooms of the Vatican with Giovanni da Udine . Having gained a reputation for these works, he received numerous orders, mostly for the interior decoration of palaces and churches .

After the sack of Rome (1527) he turned to Genoa , where he decorated, among other things, the palace of Andrea Doria with stucco, gilding , wall paintings, etc. Vaga went from Genoa via Pisa (here the fresco Child Angel in the cathedral) to Rome, where he resumed his work as a plasterer and decorative painter and also drew templates for wallpapers, canopies, embroidery, etc. Among the works of this later period, the ceiling of the Vatican's Sala Regia is the most outstanding. His graceful Madonna pictures are also known.

He died of tuberculosis in Rome at the age of 46 .
