The Sala Regia (King's Hall) is a salon of honor located in the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City in Rome . It can be reached via the Scala Regia or the stairs opposite from the Cortile del Mareciallo (Italian: Marshal's Court). The Sala Regia leads to the Pauline Chapel , the Sistine Chapel and the Sala Ducale .

history

The Sala Regia was built by Antonio Sangallo between 1540 and 1573 . Originally it had the function of a throne room and was used to receive princes and royal ambassadors. The papal throne was on the west side of the hall between the entrance to the Scala Regia and that of the Sistine Chapel. Today the hall occasionally serves as a concert hall for musical performances in the presence of the Pope or the New Year's reception of the diplomatic corps. In 2016, Pope Francis was awarded the Charlemagne Prize in the Sala Regia .

At the beginning of a conclave , the cardinals go through the Sala Regia to the Sistine Chapel after a prayer in the Pauline Chapel. Likewise one arrives - z. B. at the end of the conclave - through the Sala Regia to the Benediction Loggia of St. Peter's Basilica . All rooms mentioned (with the exception of the Sistine Chapel, which is the end of a visit to the Vatican Museums ) are not open to the public.

The Sala Regia is around 40 meters long, 12 meters wide and 13 meters high up to the vault. The vault forms a perfect half cylinder . The stucco work on the vault was done by Perino del Vaga (a student of Raphael ), the decorations over the doors are by Daniele da Volterra .

The frescoes show significant turning points in the history of the Church, including the return of Pope Gregory XI. from Avignon to Rome, the naval battle of Lepanto , the lifting of the excommunication of Henry IV and the reconciliation of Pope Alexander III. with Friedrich Barbarossa . Some of the most famous artists of the mid-16th century were involved in the painting:
