Geography and traffic

Bakkagerði is located on the fjord Borgarfjörður eystri , after which the place is sometimes called Borgarfjörður eystri , and has a harbor. The place is about 70 km from Egilsstaðir and 725 km by road from Reykjavík .

The road to Bakkagerði leads from the bay Héraðsflói over the unpaved pass road Vatnsskarð eystra and around a cape.

On Borgarfjarðarvegur street S94you will pass the wooden cross Naddakross . It has been rebuilt over and over again for centuries and, according to legend, is supposed to protect travelers from the monster Naddi on this dangerous path directly on the coast.

The area with its colorful rhyolite mountains and the Dyrfjöll mountain range split in the middle has become a well-known hiking area.

Culture and sights

Álfaborg

Bakkagerði has always been considered a special seat of elves .

According to tradition, one of the residences of the elf king and his court under the Álfaborg rock is close to the village .

The well-known painter Jóhannes Sveinsson Kjarval grew up in this place and created a rather unusual version of the Sermon on the Mount as an altarpiece in the church consecrated in 1901: Jesus is standing on Álfaborg .

In the sales and showroom of the company Álfasteinn there are decorative and useful items made of stone.

Borgarfjörður eystri was the setting and location of the award-winning Danish-Icelandic film Herzstein (original title: Hjartasteinn ) by Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson .
