The place Bakkagerdi |
The Borgarfjörður eystri (or eystra ) is a fjord in the northeast of Iceland , in one of the most remote areas of the island. It extends only 5 km into the country, at a width of 4 km.
Transport links
From Egilsstaðir on the ring road , the Borgarfjarðarvegur runs northwards past the Dyrfjöll massif (Eng. = Türberge). These rise up to over 1200 m and an indentation called Stórurð has formed in the middle with an enormous flank collapse . The road continues over the Vatnsskarð eystra pass . The road is 68 km long and has not yet been tarred for its entire length.
When you come down from the pass in the direction of the fjord, you first have to go around a daring cape between the bay Njarðvík and the fjord on an unpaved road. Above is an erosion slope called Njarðvíkurskriður . Today the place is relatively safe compared to earlier times, as the road is wide enough. In earlier times, the journey here seemed so daring because of the danger of falling rocks that the legend of the monster Naddi emerged, who lurked here to pull people into the depths. A stone cross with a (Latin) prayer by the roadside reminds of the time.
Once you have circled this cape, the view of Bakkagerði opens up . On January 1, 2019, the place had 77 inhabitants.
Elves
The fjord derives its name from "Álfaborg", in English "elf hill", a stony hill in the immediate vicinity of Bakkagerði.
The village is known in esoteric circles as the seat of the Icelandic elf queen and therefore there are many legends on the subject in the region. Even the painter Jóhannes S. Kjarval , who grew up here, immortalized the elven hill in the main altarpiece of Bakkagerði church.
geology
Behind the village in a westerly direction there are some extinct central volcanoes from the Tertiary , which also left behind mountains of rhyolite rock here. Similar to Berufjörður , some of the mountains have basalt intrusions and the like. a. at the summit, this is particularly noticeable at Staðarfjall (620 m).
hike
The area is considered a hiker's paradise. In summer there are huts in the abandoned fjords to the west ( Víknaslóðir ). The trekking paths lead past , among other things, the multi-colored, extinct volcano Hvítserkur .
Hiking trails also lead to Stórurð.
