Herzstein (original title Hjartasteinn ) is a Danish-Icelandic film drama by Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson , which premiered on September 1, 2016 as part of the 2016 Venice Film Festival .

action

In the remote fishing village of Borgarfjörður eystri in Iceland. It's summer vacation and four boys, all around 13 years old, are enjoying the first warm rays of sunshine on a pier. Þór takes an outsider position and has to stand up to his taller playmates, who scoff at the fact that he lacks any visible signs of puberty. In the local youth club, too, the brawlers target him and harass him verbally and physically. At home, on the other hand, it is Þór's older sisters who constantly raise him. Once they even let their brother stand naked on the doorstep and in front of his alleged lover Kristján.

He and Kristján, however, are only best friends, trust each other completely and find in their friendship the warmth that they lack in their own families. Kristján struggles with his always drunk father at home. They prefer to hang out in the junkyard or pass the time catching fish.

One day, Þór falls in love with Beta, a local girl. As a good friend, Kristján helps his buddy get closer to her because he doesn't know how to do it. Gradually, however, Kristján has to admit to himself that he feels more than friendship for Þór, because his affection for his best friend is growing stronger and stronger. Nothing remains secret in the village, including his homosexuality, but that is still a taboo subject in Borgarfjörður eystri, and Þór too initially distances himself from Kristján.

background

Because homosexuality was decriminalized in Iceland as early as 1940, the country is considered a queer paradise. Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir was the world's first openly lesbian head of government in 2009. A third of the population visits Christopher Street Day every year: " Coming out in the land of elves, volcanoes and geysers should, you might think, really not be a problem," says Queer .

Reviews

In Queer you can read that the moving youth drama shows that even tolerant Iceland is not an LGBT paradise . It also says there that the provincial narrowness of the village community contrasts Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson with the vastness of Icelandic nature, which the drama shows in breathtaking settings.

In August 2017 it was announced that the film was on the longlist, from which the nominees for the 30th European Film Award will be determined.
