The municipality of Dalvíkurbyggð is located in northern Iceland in the Norðurland eystra region . On January 1, 2019, it had 1905 inhabitants.
The main town of the municipality is Dalvík with 1381 inhabitants, other larger settlements are Hauganes with 118 inhabitants and Litli-Árskógssandur with 107 inhabitants.
Geographical location
The municipality includes a coastline on the west side of the Eyjafjordur between Akureyri and Ólafsfjörður where the three settlements Dalvík, Hauganes and Árskógarsandur lie, and the valleys Svarfaðardalur and the nature reserve Skíðadalur that in the interior of the peninsula Tröllaskagi usher on which the municipality lies.
history
The community was created on June 7, 1998 through the merger of the city of Dalvík ( Dalvíkurkaupstaður ) with the two rural communities Svarfaðardalur ( Svarfaðardalshreppur ) and Árskógur ( Árskógshreppur ).
Transport links
Road 82 leads from Akureyri along the Eyjafjörður via Dalvík to Ólafsfjörður . From here, in or near Dalvík, the secondary roads 806, 807 and 805 branch off, which lead into Tröllaskagi.
The ferry runs from Dalvík to the island of Grímsey , which lies in the Northern Sea off Iceland. The island of Hrísey can also be reached by ferry.
There is an international airport in Akureyri. After Reykjavik , there are 412 km.
Hauganes and Árskógssandur
Both villages belonging to the municipality are located a little south of Dalvík towards Akureyri.
In the villages one lives mainly from fishing and processing as well as from tourism. From Árskógssandur there is a ferry to the island of Hrísey , and from Hauganes you can take part in whale watching trips on the fjord.
