Hvolsvöllur ([ ˈkvolsˌvœtlʏr̥ ]) is a small town in southern Iceland in the municipality of Rangárþing eystra . It had 988 inhabitants on January 1, 2019.

geography

The place is located 106 km east of Reykjavík on Hringvegur , south of the river Eystri-Rangá . To the east is the Fljótshlíð area with the town of Breiðabólstaður .

history

The settlement began in 1930 with the opening of a cooperative store, Kaupfélag Hallgeirseyjar .

The famous Icelandic saga of the sage Njáll takes place in the vicinity of this place, at the historic Stórólfshvoll farm .
