Ísafjarðarbær is a municipality in the Westfjords region of Iceland . On January 1, 2019, the municipality had 3800 inhabitants, of which 2703 lived in the town of Ísafjörður .
History of the community
Ísafjarðarbær was in 1996 by the merger of the city of Isafjordur ( Ísafjarðarkaupstaður ) with the five rural communities Flateyri ( Flateyrarhreppur ) Mosvallahreppur , Mýrar ( Mýrahreppur ) Suðureyri ( Suðureyrarhreppur ) and Þingeyri ( Þingeyrarhreppur formed). Through these incorporations the district ( sýsla ) Vestur-Ísafjarðarsýsla was dissolved.
The rural communities Snæfjöll ( Snæfjallahreppur ), Grunnavík ( Grunnavíkurhreppur ), Eyri ( Eyrarhreppur ) and Sléttuhreppur were incorporated into Ísafjörður, and Auðkúluhreppur after Þingeyri.
Flateyri
Flateyri is a village on the north bank of Önundarfjörður with 201 inhabitants (January 1, 2019).
Ísafjörður
Ísafjörður is the main town and administrative seat of the municipality of Ísafjarðarbær with 2703 inhabitants (January 1, 2019).
Suðureyri
Suðureyri is a small fishing village with 264 inhabitants (January 1, 2019) in Súgandafjörður .
Þingeyri
Þingeyri is a settlement in Dýrafjörður with 249 inhabitants (January 1, 2019).
