Sungai Petani - named after the river of the same name ( Malay : sungai = river, petani = (rice) farmer) is a city in the state and sultanate of Kedah in Malaysia . Sungai Petani is often abbreviated to "SP".

Geography and location

Sungai Petani is about 40 km northwest of Penang ( Butterworth ). Sungai Petani has good transport links. Sungai Petani has two junctions on the north-south toll road that leads to Thailand . In addition, the railway line from Singapore to Thailand runs directly through Sungai Petani. The railway company - Keretapi Tanah Melayu - offers regional trains and regular intercity connections to the north and south. In addition, more and more container transports are being carried out on this route in order to relieve the roads. The nearest airports to be reached in about an hour's drive are the airport Penang and the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Alor Setar , the capital of the state of Kedah.
