The Bayan Lepas International Airport , also known as Penang International Airport , is the international airport of the island of Penang , one of the main attractions for tourists in Malaysia is. The airport is located on the south-eastern edge of the island and is equipped with an intercontinental runway approximately 3.5 km in length.
In addition to the passenger airlines , several international cargo airlines , including the German Lufthansa Cargo , also head for Penang Airport.
Up to twelve aircraft can park on the main apron at the same time. The modern terminal building consists of a central building for the processing of check-in and baggage claim and a pier building in front, which is equipped with eight passenger boarding bridges .
The former short runway was converted into a taxiway for the newly built runway when the airport was last expanded .
In 2000, a new cargo handling building was opened in order to cope with the continuously increasing freight volume for more than six years, with a capacity of 360,000 tons per year.
Incidents
- On October 6, 1946, a transport aircraft of the type crashed Avro York C.1 of the Royal Air Force ( Air vehicle registration MW125 ) about 160 kilometers west of the destination airport Penang into the sea. The plane came from Calcutta-Dum Dum Airport . All 21 occupants, 6 crew members and 15 passengers were killed.
