Borðeyri is now the smallest village (in statistical terms) in Iceland with 16 inhabitants (as of July 15, 2018) .

The place is in the municipality of Húnaþing vestra . Over the Borðeyrarvegur H640and further over the Innstrandavegur S68 it is 171 kilometers by road to Reykjavík . In earlier centuries Borðeyri was an important trading center with its port on the west bank of the Hrútafjörður . The toponyms Hrútafjörður and Borðeyri were already mentioned in the Vatnsdœla saga .

Here was sigurður eggerz born (1875-1945). He later became a Member of the Icelandic Parliament , Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.
