Vesturbyggð is an Icelandic municipality in the Vestfirðir region . On January 1, 2019, the community had 998 inhabitants.
history
The community was created on June 11, 1994 through the merger of the four rural communities
- Barðaströnd ( Barðastrandarhreppur ),
- Rauðasandur ( Rauðasandshreppur ),
- Patrekshreppur and
- Bíldudalur ( Bíldudalshreppur ).
On the land side, it completely encloses the rural community of Tálknafjörður . The largest place is Patreksfjörður with 675 inhabitants, 208 people live in Bíldudalur. Vesturbyggð also includes Krossholt , which as of 2007 had 19 residents.
Patreksfjörður
Patreksfjörður is a fishing village that was granted town charter in 1954. It is located on the north side of the fjord of the same name .
The town's airport is opposite on the south side of the fjord. Patreksfjörður is 403 kilometers by road from Reykjavík . The distance to the westernmost point of Iceland Bjargtangar , which is on the municipal area, is around 60 km.
Bíldudalur
The small fishing village of Bíldudalur lives mainly from fishing and specializes in catching and processing crabs.
