Þykkvibær is a place in the south and is considered the oldest village in Iceland .
The village name appears for the first time in 1270 in the church book of Oddi . The settlement goes back to Þorkell bjálfi, who settled on Haf. The village is located about 15 km south-southwest of Hella and can be reached from the ring road over the Þykkvabæjarvegur
. Þykkvibær lies between the Þjórsá and Hólsá rivers , which when flooded completely enclosed the village before dams were built in 1923. Today Þykkvibær is known for growing potatoes in the country.
