The rural community Svalbarðsströnd ( Icelandic Svalbarðsstrandarhreppur ) is located in northern Iceland in the Norðurland eystra region .

On January 1, 2019, the municipality had 491 inhabitants, 361 of whom lived in the main town of Svalbarðseyri .

geography

The municipality is located on the east bank of Eyjafjörður . The next larger town is Akureyri , which is directly opposite the fjord. The municipality of Grýtubakkahreppur lies north of Svalbarðsströnd , Þingeyjarsveit in the east and Eyjafjarðarsveit in the south .

To the east of the main town Svalbarðseyri is the Vaðlaheiði and (already in the municipality of Þingeyjarsveit in the east ) the wooded Fnjóskadalur . Lake Veigastaðavatn is located in the southeast of the municipality . At Svalbarðseyri the river Ljótsstaðaá flows into the Eyjafjörður.

An incorporation to Akureyri was rejected in a referendum on October 8, 2005.
