Career

Greg Walden attended the University of Oregon at Eugene until 1981 . He later owned a communications company with his wife Mylene. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1981 and 1987 he served on the staff of Congressman Denny Smith ; from 1988 to 1995 he was a member of the Oregon House of Representatives . He then sat from 1995 to 1997 in the State Senate , where he was the group leader of the Republican Senators. In the meantime, he strove to run for governor of Oregon. However, after his unborn son was diagnosed with a heart defect, he abandoned these plans. The child died shortly after birth.

In 1994, Greg Walden was a campaign assistant to Wes Cooley , who was then elected to the US House of Representatives. After he was no longer nominated because of some lies about his military past in 1996, Walden hoped for a nomination for his place in Congress . In the run-up he had considered running as an independent candidate, which he withdrew for reasons of party tactics in order to prevent a victory for the Democrats . However, the party's nomination in 1996 went to Robert Freeman Smith , who had been a congressman for the second constituency of Oregon between 1983 and 1995. Smith was a friend of Walden's and proposed him as his successor in 1998 because he had no intention of running again himself.

In 1998, Greg Walden was elected to the US House of Representatives, where he took up his mandate on January 3, 1999. As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. Walden is or was a member of the Energy and Trade Committee and two of its sub-committees. He was previously a member of the committee on global warming and energy independence. Since 2013 he has headed the National Republican Congressional Committee .

In October 2019, he announced that he would not run again for his seat on the body in the 2020 election to the United States House of Representatives .

He lives privately with his wife in Hood River . The couple has a son. Walden is a member of the local Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club, among others.
