Peter Anthony DeFazio (born May 27, 1947 in Needham , Massachusetts ) is an American politician . Since 1987 he has represented the fourth constituency of the state of Oregon in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Peter DeFazio attended Tufts University in Medford until 1969 and studied at the University of Oregon in Eugene until 1977 . In the meantime he served in the US Air Force . He then embarked on a political career and became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1977 and 1982 he served on the staff of Congressman James H. Weaver . He was then from 1983 to 1986 County Commissioner in Lane County .

In the 1986 congressional elections, DeFazio was elected to succeed James Weaver in the US House of Representatives, where he took up his new mandate on January 3, 1987. As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. In the 2008 congressional elections, he achieved a share of the vote of 82%. In Congress , he advocates health care reform. He was against the Iraq war and for better labor and education policies. Only when it comes to gun law is he not on the liberal line of his party: he is against tightening it. In February 2009, he incurred the displeasure of President Barack Obama when he and eight other Democrats voted against the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act .

DeFazio has served on various congressional committees. He is (as of 2019) Chairman of the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure. He lives in Springfield with his wife Myrnie .
