Les AuCoin (born October 21, 1942 in Portland , Oregon ) is an American politician .

Life

AuCoin began a bachelor's degree at Portland State University in 1960 , moved to Pacific University in Forest Grove after a few months , but dropped out in 1961 and joined the US Army as a volunteer . He served until 1964. After his military service, he returned to Pacific University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1969.

His marriage to Susan Swearingen in 1964 resulted in two children, including actor Kelly AuCoin .

From 1971 to 1974 he was a member of the Oregon House of Representatives , where he served as Democratic Party Chairman in 1973 and 1974 .

In November 1974 AuCoin was elected to Congress and he represented the state of Oregon in the US House of Representatives from January 3, 1975 to January 3, 1993 . Les AuCoin was the first Democratic Congressman for Oregon's 1st  Congressional District .

In the 1992 elections, he no longer ran for a seat in the House of Representatives, but tried to be elected to the US Senate . However, he was defeated by his opponent, the Republican incumbent Bob Packwood .
