James Howard "Jim" Weaver (born August 8, 1927 in Brookings , Brookings County , South Dakota ) is a former American politician . Between 1975 and 1987 he represented the fourth constituency of the state of Oregon in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Weaver was born in South Dakota, but grew up in Des Moines ( Iowa on), where he attended public schools. During World War II , he joined the US Navy at the age of 17 , where he served aboard an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. After the war he moved to Eugene , Oregon, where he studied at the University of Oregon until 1952 . Between 1954 and 1958 Weaver worked for a publishing company. From 1959 to 1960 he was a division manager in the Oregon Department of Agriculture. Then he got into the real estate business, where he designed residential and office buildings as a planner.

Politically, James Weaver was a member of the Democratic Party , whose Democratic National Conventions he attended as a delegate in 1960 and 1964. At these congresses, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson were nominated as presidential candidates. In 1974 Weaver was elected to the US House of Representatives, where he succeeded John R. Dellenback on January 3, 1975 , whom he had defeated in the election. Weaver benefited in part from the effects of the Watergate affair on the Republican Party , to which Dellenback belonged. After a total of five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1987 . He was an opponent of the Vietnam War and nuclear power plants. On the other hand, he was committed to protecting the environment.

In 1986 he decided not to run again for the House of Representatives. Instead, he was nominated by his party as a candidate for election to the US Senate . However, after an investigation into the finances of his campaign, Weaver withdrew his candidacy. It was later found that there were no irregularities in Weaver's campaign funds and that he had not broken any law. Today James Weaver lives in Eugene, Oregon, on political retirement.
