Ward County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 58,795 residents with a population density of 11 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Minot , previously it was in Burlington from the counties of the founding (1885) to 1888.

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of North Dakota, is about 40 km to the north from the border with Canada and has an area of ​​5,326 square kilometers, of which 112 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Renville County , McHenry County , McLean County , Mountrail County, and Burke County .

history

Ward County was formed on April 14, 1885 and finally organized on November 23. It was named after Mark Ward , an early politician and member of the Legislative Assembly of the Dakota Territory .

A total of 15 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 3, 2018).

Ward County had a population of 58,795 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 2,171 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 23,041 households and 15,368 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The median income for a household in the 33,670 USD , and the median income for a family was 41,342 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,980 versus $ 19,830 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,926. 7.9 percent of families and 10.8 percent families lived below the poverty line.
