To the surprise of many, however, he announced on March 11, 2010 that he would no longer run for the elections to the Second Chamber on June 9, 2010 and that he would withdraw from politics. The reason he gave was that he wanted to have more time for his private life.

He had been an IOC member since 2013, but Eurlings resigned on January 5, 2018 because a heated discussion had broken out about himself . He only responded to the accusation of abusing his girlfriend at the time in 2015 with an apology in December 2017, which his critics considered half-hearted and too late.
