James Nelson Huston (* 1849 in Greencastle , Pennsylvania , † 1927 ) was an American banker, businessman and government official.

Career

James Nelson Huston, son of Isabella E. Duncan and William Huston (1801–1875), was born in Franklin County during the Mexican-American War . His family moved in 1851 to Indiana and settled in Connersville ( Fayette County down). In 1870 he was one of the co-founders of the local bank, better known as Citizens' Bank. William Huston died on January 5, 1875, leaving his son James with a great fortune. James Nelson Huston became the owner of Citizens' Bank at that time. He later went on to do a number of businesses including coffins, milling, silver plating, buggies, hosiery, and gas.

Huston was also politically active. He joined the Republican Party . He was elected to Connersville City Council in 1876 and re-elected in 1878. He sat in the House of Representatives in 1880 and in the Indiana Senate in 1882 . In the Senate, he represented the following counties: Fayette County, Rush County, and Union County . In the presidential elections of 1884 and 1888 he chaired the Indiana Republican Party. President Benjamin Harrison nominated him in 1889 for the post of Treasurer of the United States and the US Senate confirmed his nomination. He then held the post from May 11, 1889 to April 24, 1891.

He then became the President of the National Trust Company. On January 3, 1910, Huston and two others were charged with postal fraud in Washington, DC . He was sentenced on December 14, 1910.
