William Selden

William Selden (born January 31, 1791 in Henrico County , Virginia ; † April 7, 1874 ) was Treasurer of the United States from July 22, 1839 to November 23, 1850 . He held the post under six US Presidents : Martin Van Buren , William Henry Harrison , John Tyler , James K. Polk , Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore .

Career

William Selden was the son of Elizabeth Armistead Selden (1752-1833) and Miles Selden (1752-1811). He sat for Henrico County in the Virginia House of Representatives between 1813 and 1816 and between 1818 and 1821 . Later he worked as a registrar in the land registry. US President Martin Van Buren appointed him Treasurer of the United States in 1839, a post he held until 1850. His tenure was overshadowed by the Mexican-American War .

family

Selden was married twice. On November 26, 1833, he married Maria Eliza Swann († 1834). The couple had one child together. After the death of his first wife, he married Emily Hunter on June 9, 1840. He had eight children with his second wife.
