Kathleen Lynn Brown (born September 25, 1945 in San Francisco ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Between 1991 and 1995 she was State Treasurer in California .

Life

Kathleen Brown is the daughter of the politician Pat Brown , who was governor of California from 1959 to 1967 . Her brother Jerry Brown, who was seven years her senior, was governor of the state from 1975 to 1983 and again from 2011 to 2019. Brown himself studied her father law . After completing her studies, she initially worked in law, but then embarked on a political career. In 1975 she was first elected to the Los Angeles City Education Committee. She was a member of this until 1987. In 1990, Brown ran for the office of State Treasurerin California, which is roughly the equivalent of a Treasury Secretary. After her election for the Democrats, she took this office in January 1991 and was thus part of the government of that state.

In 1994 Brown aspired to the post of governor like her father and brother. At the Primary in June of that year she was able to prevail and was thus nominated for her party's candidate. After her party colleague Dianne Feinstein in 1990, she was the second woman to be elected by one of the major parties. However, she lost the gubernatorial election in November significantly against Republican incumbent Pete Wilson , who prevailed with 55 to 40% of the vote.

After her defeat, she left the government in 1995 and ended her political career. In 1994, she did not stand for another election as State Treasurer in order to concentrate on running for governor. In the following years, Brown worked in business, including for Goldman Sachs . Brown has been a partner in an American law firm since 2010.

Private

Kathleen Brown is married to the journalist Van Goten Sauter. The couple have no children, but Brown has three children from a previous marriage.

After taking office for the second time as governor in early 2011, she gave her brother Jerry her dog Sutter , who served as California's First Dog until his death in December 2016 .
