Harvey C. Smith (born July 7, 1874 in Coshocton , Ohio , † May 26, 1929 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American teacher, newspaper publisher , lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ). He was Secretary of State of Ohio from 1919 to 1923 .

Career

Harvey C. Smith was born in Coshocton County about nine years after the Civil War ended . The Smith family moved to Muskingum County, Ohio when he was a child . Nothing is known about his youth. Smith served as a teacher and newspaper publisher before being elected probate judge for three consecutive terms in Muskingum County, where he was well respected in the state. He was elected Secretary of State in 1918 and re-elected in 1920.

Harvey C. Smith was married to Cora E. Littick. The couple had a son named Clyde. He died in Columbus, Ohio in 1929 and was then buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Zanesville, Ohio.
