Addison Peale Russell (born September 8, 1826 in Wilmington , Ohio , † July 24, 1912 ibid) was an American newspaperman, politician ( Republican Party ) and writer. He served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1856 to 1857 and was Secretary of State of Ohio from 1858 to 1862 .

Career

Addison Peale Russell was born in Clinton County in 1826 . His school education ended with the Grammar School . At the age of 16 he took a job as a printer for a newspaper. By the time he was 19 he worked his way up to the editor and publisher of Hillsboro News . He pursued a career in journalism until he switched to politics and the civil service. In 1850 he became a clerk in the Ohio Senate . He later represented Clinton County in the Ohio House of Representatives. He then served as Secretary of State. During the Civil War , he was appointed Financial Agent for Ohio, based in New York City . Russell retired from public service in 1868 and devoted himself to literature. He died on July 24, 1912 in Wilmington, where he was buried two days later in Sugar Grove Cemetery .
