Lewis C. Laylin

Lewis Cass Laylin (born September 28, 1848 in Norwalk , Ohio , † November 17, 1923 ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ). He sat in the Ohio House of Representatives and was Secretary of State of Ohio from 1901 to 1907 . Laylin was a Freemason .

Career

Lewis Cass Laylin, son of Mary Weyburn (1813-1877) and John Laylin (1791-1877), was born after the end of the Mexican-American War in Huron County and grew up there. Nothing is known about his youth. He graduated from Norwalk High School in 1867 . His school days were overshadowed by the civil war. In 1869 he became superintendent for public schools in Bellevue . Laylin studied law and was admitted to the bar on March 13, 1876. He spent two years as a town clerk ( city clerk ) in Norwalk operates. He also served on the Huron County's Board of School Examiners for twelve years and served as President of the Norwalk City Board of Examiners for three years . In 1879 he was elected prosecuting attorney in Huron County - a position he held for seven years.

Laylin served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1888 to 1893. During this time he held the post of speaker from 1892 to 1893 . The Republican Party nominated him in 1900 for the post of Secretary of State of Ohio. After his election, he took office in 1901. At that time he and his family moved to Columbus, Ohio. He was re-elected twice in a row.

Laylin died on November 17, 1923 and was then buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Norwalk.

On November 3, 1880, he married Frances L. Dewey (1856-1935) from Norwalk, daughter of Ann Eliza Wolcott and John Fairchild Dewey. The couple had three sons: Clarence D., Robert W. and Lewis C.
