Milton Barnes (politician)
Milton Barnes (born April 26, 1830 in Barnesville , Ohio , † June 2, 1895 in Westerville , Ohio) was an American teacher, lawyer , officer and politician ( Republican Party ). He was Secretary of State of Ohio from 1877 to 1881 .
Career
Milton Barnes was born and raised in Belmont County about seven years before the onset of the 1837 Depression . He attended district schools. At the age of 18 he became a teacher and at the age of 19 he began Allegheny College in Meadville ( Pennsylvania to visit), but returned home because of his poor health. He studied law and mathematics at the Academy in Salem, Ohio and then a law practice in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He was admitted to the bar in January 1859. He then moved to Cambridge, Ohio, where he opened a law practice.
With the outbreak of the Civil War he raised a company and signed up as a captain in the 62nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He returned home because of his poor health. Barnes relinquished his command, but later re-enlisted as Lieutenant Colonel in the 97th Regiment . He was seriously wounded twice and retired in June 1865.
In 1867 he was elected Prosecuting Attorney in Guernsey County and re-elected in 1869. The Republican Party nominated him in 1876 for the post of Secretary of State of Ohio. He defeated the Democrat William Bell in the elections . On his re-election in 1878, he defeated Congressman David R. Paige and two others. He did not run for another term.
