William Henry Smith (born December 1, 1833 in Austerlitz , New York , † July 27, 1896 in Lake Forest , Illinois ) was an American newspaper editor and politician ( Republican Party ). He was Secretary of State of Ohio from 1865 to 1868 .

Career

William Henry Smith, son of Almira Gott (1809–1861) and William DeForest Smith (1805–1849), was born about four years before the onset of the economic crisis of 1837 in Columbia County and spent the first few years there. The Smith family then moved to Ohio in 1836. There he went to school. Smith was a tutor, editor of the Literary Review in Cincinnati, and editor of the Cincinnati Gazette when the Civil War broke out. He actively campaigned for entry into the Union Army .

Smith helped nominate John Brough to the post of governor of Ohio. He became his private secretary after his election as governor in 1863. Smith resigned in 1864 when the Republicans nominated him for Secretary of State of Ohio. He defeated the incumbent William W. Armstrong of the Democratic Party . On his nomination in 1866, he defeated the Democrat Benjamin Le Fevre .

On January 14, 1868, he resigned from his post as Secretary of State to operate the Cincinnati Chronicle . However, due to poor health, he had to give up the job after a short time. In 1870 he took over the management of the Western Associated Press in Chicago . Under his leadership, the Western Associated Press merged with the New York Associated Press in January 1883 . Smith became managing director of the new company.

He authored and edited historical works, including the St. Clair Papers in 1882. He died on July 27, 1896 in Lake Forest and was then interred in Lake Forest Cemetery .

William Henry Smith was married to Emeline Reynolds (1839-1891). The couple had at least one son named Delevan (1861–1922).
