William Bell Jr.

William Bell junior (born August 23, 1828 in Utica , Ohio - † July 16, 1902 ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He sat in the Ohio House of Representatives and was Secretary of State of Ohio from 1875 to 1877 .

Career

William Bell Jr. was born and raised in Licking County in 1828 . He attended community schools and the Martinsburg Academy. In 1852 he was elected sheriff in Licking County, a post he held for two years. Bell was in July 1855 Postmaster of Newark appointed. He held the post until his resignation in 1858 to accept a new nomination for sheriff. After his election, he held the post for four years. In 1863 he was elected county auditor. He held the post for seven years.

Bell was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives for Licking County in 1871 and re-elected in 1873. When he was elected Secretary of State in 1874, he resigned from his seat in Parliament. In the 1874 election, he defeated Republican Allen T. Wikoff . Bell held the post for two years. In his re-election in 1876, he suffered a defeat to Republican Milton Barnes and left office in 1877.

In 1878 Bell was appointed Commissioner of Railroads and Telegraphs . He held the post for two years. In 1881 he was elected to the Ohio General Assembly for Franklin County . He sat there for two years. Then he returned to Newark. In 1892 he was elected mayor there. He held the post for two years. In 1894 he was elected auditor. Bell held the post for six years. He was back in the Ohio House of Representatives between 1900 and 1902.

Bell was a campbellite . He married Lizzie O. Ochletree on January 1, 1856. The couple had three children: Sam C., Virginia M., and Maggie O.
