Carter B. Harlan

Carter Berry Harlan (born August 1, 1806 in Mason County , Kentucky , † June 9, 1840 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Carter Berry Harlan, son of Elizabeth Berry and Nathaniel Carter Harlan, was born in Mason County in 1806. Nothing is known about his youth. At some point he studied law . He was admitted to the bar before 1836. Harlan was elected Secretary of State of Ohio by the Ohio House of Representatives in 1836 to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Benjamin B. Hinkson on February 12, 1836. Harlan held the post in Philadelphia until his death in 1840. His tenure was overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 . William Trevitt was elected to succeed him.
