Daniel Joseph Ryan (born January 1, 1855 in Cincinnati , Ohio , † June 15, 1923 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ). He sat in the Ohio House of Representatives and was Secretary of State of Ohio from 1889 to 1892 . He also worked as a writer.

Career

Daniel Joseph Ryan, son of Honora and John Ryan, both immigrants from Ireland , was born in Cincinnati in 1855 and lived there until he was seven. The Ryan family then moved to Portsmouth, Ohio. In the following years he attended public schools there and graduated from high school in 1875. He studied law . In 1877 he was admitted to the bar. He was elected Portsmouth City Solicitor in April 1877 and re-elected in 1879. Ryan was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1883 and re-elected in 1885. During his second term in office, he was elected Speaker Pro Tempore . Ryan was elected Secretary of State of Ohio in 1888 and re-elected in 1890. In April 1891, he resigned to take up the post of World Exhibition Commissioner for the State of Ohio.

The post as Secretary of State was his last public office. In his last years he went back to his activity as a lawyer and devoted himself to literary work. Ryan served on the Ohio History Society Board of Trustees for 34 years . He died on June 15, 1923 and was then buried in Green Lawn Cemetery .

Daniel Joseph Ryan married Myra Luella Kerr (1858-1940) of Portsmouth on January 10, 1884, daughter of Frances Maria Thurston (1831-1883) and Augustus Pomeroy Kerr (1828-1878). The couple had five children. Their first three children died in childhood, while the last two daughters outlived their father. Their names were Elinor C. (* 1894) and Julia Eveleta (1888–1940).
