Portsmouth is a city in the US state of Ohio and is the county seat of Scioto County . The population was 20,909 at the 2000 census .
geography
The community is located in the very south of Ohio on the north bank of the Ohio River and east of the Scioto River .
history
After the original settlement called Alexandria was flooded several times, today's Portsmouth was founded in 1803 east of it on safer land. Since the construction of a flood wall after a flood in 1937, the city has been spared major floods.
With the completion of the Ohio-Erie Canal , which flowed into the Ohio here, and the convenient rail connections, the place quickly became a commercial center. At the beginning of the 20th century, Portsmouth still had 50,000 inhabitants, but the city could not keep up with the industrial development, especially the end of the local steel industry in the 1980s led to massive emigration, so that the population has more than halved since then.
Education and health
Shawnee State University , Ohio's fastest growing public university , is also located directly on Ohio . The schools in the Portsmouth City School District are currently being expanded to provide more space for sports and leisure.
The Southern Ohio Medical Center is affiliated with the university and is one of the most modern medical centers in Ohio. Together with the SOMC Cancer Center, Portsmouth is a center of medical research and care for the region.
