Mankato is a city in the US state of Minnesota with around 41,700 residents. It is the county seat of Blue Earth County .

Mankato is located about 100 kilometers southwest of the Twin Cities and on the Minnesota River and its tributary Blue Earth River , which flows into the Minnesota River at Mankato. According to the United States Census Bureau, the area of the city is 39.9 km². It is the administrative seat of Blue Earth County, a small part is in neighboring Nicollet County .
history
Mankato was founded in 1852. The name comes from the Dakota , for whom mahkato means “blue-green earth”, which is due to the blue clay soil in the region. The current name Mankato arose from a spelling mistake by an official .
In 1862, the largest mass execution in the history of the United States as a result of the Sioux uprising took place in Mankato : 38 Dakota were hanged as participants in the uprising. Another 265 convicts were pardoned by President Abraham Lincoln .
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, Mankato has 32,427 people in 12,367 households and 6,059 families. The population density is 323.9 inhabitants per km². From a racial perspective, the population is made up of over 93 percent white population and a Spanish or Latin American minority.
Children under the age of 18 live in 23.6% of the 12,367 households, married couples in 36.7%, female singles in 8.8% and 51.0% are not family households. 32.2% of all households consist exclusively of a single person and 9.9% are single people over 65 years of age.
In relation to the entire city, the population is made up of 16.9% residents under 18 years of age, 32.5% between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.9% between 25 and 44 years of age, 15.4% between 45 and 64 years of age 11.3% over 65 years. The median is 25 years. About 51% of the population is female.
The median income of a household is USD 33,956 and that of a family is USD 47,297. The per capita income is $ 17,652. About 19.0% of the population and 8.5% of families live below the poverty line.
