architecture

The factory complex, built in 1854/55, was known as “Germany's largest industrial palace” in its time.

The brick buildings of the Gladbach Actienspinnerei and weaving mill are designed in the form canon of Gothic castle complexes.

Only the former weaving section , which was restored in 1974/78 and converted into a school , meets the requirements of a monument .

It is an elongated, four-storey building on an L-shaped floor plan . Opening of the facade in regularly arranged vertical format windows with round or segment-arched ends. The facade facing the Republic Square is divided into 13 window axes .

The buildings of the Gladbach Actienspinnerei and Weaving Mill exemplify the development of factory architecture in Rhineland around 1850. With the transfer of the forms of meaning of the ruler's architecture to functionally dependent structures and floor plans, the status and self-image of the founders are also illustrated. In addition, the building complex documents the possibility of converting monuments, whereby both wings in their conversion or restoration express the different perception of the value of the building and the preservation of monuments over time.
