Gisela Jacobasch (born February 4, 1935 in Danzig ) is a German biochemist and food researcher .

Life

Gisela Jacobasch, née Kroggel, attended high school in the mathematics and natural sciences branch in Berlin and graduated from high school in 1954 . She then began studying medicine at the Medical Faculty ( Charité ) of the Humboldt University of Berlin (HUB) in the field of stomatology (dentistry). In 1960 she obtained her license to practice medicine as a dentist . She then trained as a specialist in biochemistry with Samuel Mitja Rapoport , the most prominent biochemist in the GDR. In 1961, she received her second license to practice physiological chemistry , as she had completed the Physikum for human medicine and all major subjects of medical education. In 1964 she completed her doctorate at the Medical Faculty of the HUB with a dissertation on the subject of "Comparative determinations of NADH cytochrome c reductase in different organs and animal species and the influence of hunger on the retention of the enzyme." completed with the highest grade “summa cum laude”.

In 1965 Jacobasch was appointed senior physician . In 1968 she was certified as a specialist in biochemistry , and she was given a teaching position for the main biochemistry course for medical students.

In 1970 she was awarded the facultas docendi (teaching qualification), and her habilitation (doctorate B) at the Biosciences Faculty of the HUB with a thesis on the regulation of the glycolytic metabolism of red blood cells followed . With this she obtained the academic degree Dr. sc. nat. Jacobasch was appointed university lecturer for biochemistry at the HUB (corresponded to a C3 professorship ).

In 1974 Jacobasch was appointed full professor of biochemistry at the HUB (Charité) and appointed deputy director of the institute . After the retirement of the director of the Institute of Biochemistry Samuel Mitja Rapoport , Jacobasch was acting director of the institute from 1978 to 1979.

After German reunification , Jacobasch was an employee professor at the HUB from 1992 to 1995 . From 1990 to 1992 she was also deputy chairwoman of the ZPSK of the HUB, a member of the Charité parliament and the council of the HUB.

In 1995 Jacobasch moved to the newly founded German Institute for Nutritional Research in Potsdam-Rehbrücke , where he became head of the preventive-medical food research department . In 2000 she passed her retirement here. Until 2008 she published scientific papers.

The Jacobasch family has lived in Wandlitz since 1970 . Gisela Jacobasch, b. Kroggel, is married with one child.

Scientific fields of work

  • 1960–1964 enzyme kinetics , enzymology , protein purification
  • 1965–1968 Electrolyte metabolism , development of a test program for diagnosing anemia
  • 1968–1980 detailed studies on the regulation of erythrocyte glycolysis , purification and characterization of red blood cells , mathematical modeling of control enzymes and the glycolysis chain. This work was carried out in close cooperation with hematologists and paediatricians in many countries within the framework of the Comecon . These research results formed the basis for therapeutic and preventive measures.

  • 1986–1989 work on the rheological behavior of red blood cells in congenital metabolic disorders
  • 1990–1995 Clarification of the structure of the PK-L gene
  • 1995–2000 Preventive Medical Food Research . The focus was on researching the interrelationships between the metabolism of the bacteria (microbiota) living in the large intestine and the entire organism. It has been recognized that diets high in fat and energy alter the bacterial composition in the colon, leading to a chronic inflammatory state. This initiates many common diseases (type II diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular damage, tumor diseases and neurodegenerative diseases). With prebiotics (substrates for the metabolism of bacteria), as developed by Jacobasch and her colleagues (e.g. prebiotic immunoform fibra), a healthy composition of the microbiota can be restored and stabilized and the initiation of diseases suppressed.

Jacobasch published numerous research articles, and she supervised over 100 diploma students, doctoral students and post-doctoral students who completed their graduation theses under her supervision. She has submitted over 150 publications in national and international specialist journals and specialist books.
