The Plain Dealer is a daily newspaper from Cleveland in the US state of Ohio . It belongs to the Advance Publications media group and, with around 300,000 copies sold on workdays and around 400,000 on Sundays, is the daily newspaper with the highest circulation in Ohio. The newspaper won the Pulitzer Prize twice , in 1953 for a cartoon and in 2005 in the commentary category .
The Plain Dealer first appeared on January 7, 1842, initially as a weekly newspaper, and finally as a daily evening paper from April 7, 1845. From March 16, 1885, a morning edition appeared. After the evening edition in 1905, the Plain Dealer finally became the morning paper that it is today.
The Plain Dealer was originally close to the Democrats . Around 1940 there was a clear political shift towards the Republicans . This happened in exactly the opposite direction to the political currents in the city, which during the New Deal largely turned away from the Republicans and became a stronghold of the Democrats. At the beginning of the 1960s, however, a certain political balance was achieved again through further restructuring in the editorial office.
In the following years, the Plain Dealer rose to become the largest daily newspaper in the region. In 1968 he overtook the leading daily newspaper, the Cleveland Press . Since they were discontinued in 1982, the Plain Dealer is now the only remaining daily newspaper in the Cleveland area.
The Plain Dealer editorial team provides most of the coverage for the regional news website cleveland.com , also part of Advance Publications.
