history

The Lisbon area was first settled by immigrants from Pennsylvania and parts of Europe in the early 19th century. In 1840 the place, whose economy was mainly shaped by the needs of the surrounding farms, had about 1,800 inhabitants; mainly grain, wool and leather were processed.

The first Ohio newspaper appeared in New Lisbon, as the place was initially called. The Alsatian William D. Lepper brought out the German-language paper under the name "Der Patriot am Ohio". He later changed the name to The Ohio Patriot due to lack of success and wrote the reports in English. Robert E. Cazden: The German Book Trade In Ohio Before 1848 . In: Ohio History . 84, 1998, pp. 57-77. Lisbon was the northernmost village where acts of war took place during the American Civil War.
