Cash box

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cashbox (also: Cash Box ) was a weekly music magazine that was published from July 1942 to November 16, 1996. The magazine has since been revived as an online edition.

Cashbox was one of the publications that compiled lists of popular music tracks in the United States . The most prominent competitors were Billboard and Record World .

In contrast to Billboard, Cashbox originally put all available recordings of a song in a chart position, provided them with information on the respective artists and labels of the respective version and sorted them alphabetically by company. Therefore, it was not initially clear which recording had sold the best, but from the October 25, 1952 issue, an asterisk was placed next to the names of the most important artists. From the spring of 1950, Cashbox also published jukebox charts with additional information on the recording artists.

Different hit lists were kept, namely about record sales and radio airplay - similar to what Billboard did with its Billboard Hot 100 , which tried to present all popularity values at the end in a summarized list. In addition, Cashbox kept genre-oriented lists, for example for country music and R&B.

Cashbox was revitalized as an internet magazine in 2006 with the approval and support of the founder's family, George Albert, and occasionally issues special printed editions.
