Ernst Lüthold

Ernst Lüthold (born May 24, 1904 in Baar ; † August 27, 1966 in Zurich ) was a Swiss composer .

Life

Ernst Lüthold comes from an old Baar family. His father, Arnold Lüthold, was a decorative painter and amateur clarinetist who substituted in the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich . Although Ernst Lüthold showed musical talent at an early age, he first learned a commercial profession in Zurich and worked as an employee in the banking and pharmaceutical industries. In the end, Lüthold decided to take up a musical education and in 1927 passed the diploma examination to become a conductor at the Zurich Music Academy.

In the following years Lüthold was active as the musical director of various choirs and wind orchestras, including in Baar, Adliswil , Küsnacht , Lucerne and Kilchberg . With these orchestras he was also successful in competitions, around 1937 at the Zug Cantonal Music Festival and in 1948 at the Federal Music Festival in St. Gallen. In addition, he trained other wind music conductors and was active as a judge in competitions. He was also involved in founding the wind orchestra of the Zurich Music Academy and the ELWE music publisher .

Lüthold was an important composer of military marches, including the well-known piece "Schwyzer soldiers". His first march, "Across the Ocean", was inspired by the Atlantic crossing that Charles Lindbergh made in 1927. Lüthold wrote a total of 23 marches; In addition, he wrote other pieces for wind music and numerous works for choir.
