Paul Russo (born April 10, 1914 in Kenosha , Wisconsin , USA ; † February 13, 1976 in Clearwater , Florida ; USA) was an American racing car driver .

Career

Like many American racing drivers, Paul Russo began his career with midget cars . He contested his first races in 1934; In 1938 he won the AAA Eastern Midget Championship. He was part of a group of racing drivers known as the "Chicago Gang". Tony Bettenhausen and Duke Nalon also belonged to this community .

In the years between 1940 and 1941, 1946 and 1954, and between 1956 and 1959 and again in 1962, he competed a total of 85 times in the AAA National Series and the USAC Series . He was victorious three times, in 1950 in Springfield, 1951 in Detroit and 1952 in Williams Grove. His best placement at the Indianapolis 500 , where he started 14 times, was second in 1955, which he had to share with Tony Bettenhausen.

Since the 500 miles were part of the Formula 1 World Championship from 1950 to 1960 , he was also involved in eight races. He achieved 8.5 points, one pole position and one fastest lap.

Paul Russo was the brother of Joe Russo and the uncle of Eddie Russo . After his career, he worked as an accessory parts agent in Indianapolis. He died in 1976 while visiting the Daytona 500 .
