New York State Route 344 or NY 344 for short is a state route that runs entirely within Copake in Columbia County of New York . The country road is 3 km long. It runs from the junction with New York State Route 22 to the state border with Massachusetts in the east. Its primary purpose is to provide access to the state parks at Bash Bish Falls on both sides of the New York-Massachusetts border. Unlike most state routes in New York that lead to the border with the neighboring state, there is no equivalent road in Massachusetts because NY 344 becomes an unnumbered route in Massachusetts. The road continues through Bash Bish Falls State Park to an intersection with a local road where it ends.

Route description

First sign of the NY 344 heading west.

NY 344 begins at the intersection with New York State Route 22 in the hamlet of Copake Falls and runs first southeast and then east into Taconic State Park . NY 344 crosses some local roads and then passes the base of Sunset Rock, a 549 m high mountain on the state line. Then it goes east, first along the base of Cedar Mountain and then up this mountain before NY 344 leads into Massachusetts and becomes an unnumbered street.

As Falls Road, it passes the falls and the base of Mount Washington before ending at the junction with West Street 1.8 miles east of the state line.

history

NY 344 was designated as a 2.47 km state route between Copake Falls in the west and the state border with Massachusetts between the early and mid-1930s . At that time, the part of what is now NY 344 inside and north of Copake Falls was part of a different alignment of New York State Route 22 . NY 344 was expanded to its current length between 1947 and 1953 when NY 22 received a new course further west past Copake Falls. The entire section of the former NY 22 within Copake Falls and Taconic State Park is currently listed as extended NY 344 from the north and as undesignated New York State Route 980F from the south .
