Yahoo Maps (also spelled Yahoo! Maps , also Local Search , Yahoo Route Planner and Yahoo Local ) was an Internet geodata service from Yahoo , with which you could search for places, hotels and other objects and then display them on images of geographic data as well as satellite and aerial images to be able to look at.

description

In Yahoo Maps, representations of geographic data could be viewed free of charge, as with other Internet geospatial data services such as Google Maps and Bing Maps , aerial photographs and satellite images . In addition to the data provided, various services could be used, including for location searches and route planning .

Development and history

On May 16, 2007, Yahoo released a new map style designed by Kartographie Cartifact. Data and images were provided by Cartifact, including features such as the relief, surface properties and land cover color tones, as well as the main climates.

The road network and other vector data used in Yahoo Maps came from Navteq , Tele Atlas and Public Domain companies. Detailed road network data was available for the United States , Canada , Puerto Rico , Virgin Islands, and most European countries. Country borders, cities and bodies of water have been mapped for the rest of the world. Satellite images were available from all over the world.

Yahoo Maps provided city maps and driving directions for the United States and Canada. One of the following functions was partly available worldwide:

  • Address book: Registered users at Yahoo can save their frequently used addresses.
  • Live road traffic: Incident markers and current motorway conditions could be shown on the display.
  • Point of Interest Finder: SmartView ™ could be used to find businesses and other points of interest near your current location, with clickable icons with address, phone number and links for more information.
  • Directions: A route could be found. Links to directions could be sent via email.

Yahoo discontinued its map service on September 13, 2011 and recommended the use of Nokia Maps , Nokia's map service.

Web services

Developers were able to embed Yahoo Maps into their own web pages (up to a mashup ) using the Yahoo Maps Developer APIs :

  • Flash API : Leverages the Adobe Flash platform so developers can write in JavaScript, ActionScript, Adobe Flex 1.5
  • Ajax API : for interactive maps without Flash plug-in; Ajax applications are written in JavaScript
  • Simple-API : The Simple API is basically an XML data format, an extension of GeoRSS , for displaying points of interest
