Navteq ( NAVTEQ , until February 2004 Navigation Technologies (Navtech) ) was an American provider of geospatial data for use in navigation devices . In July 2011, Navteq merged with Nokia's new Location & Commerce division , which is now run as HERE . The European headquarters were in Veldhoven near Eindhoven in the Netherlands .

history

The Chicago- based company was founded in 1985. The first product was presented in 1987: for 50 cents each way, electronic road information in the San Francisco region could be used at car rentals, in hotels and also by post . There were a total of 80 such information centers. The project was a success. In the 1990s, the company changed its business concept: The information centers were no longer set up, only licenses for the electronic cards were offered. Then Philips took a majority stake in the company with 600 million US dollars and built the database for the cards. The first European branch was founded in 1991.

The company went public in 2004 on the New York Stock Exchange . At the end of 2007, the stock had a market capitalization of $ 7.61 billion. On October 1, 2007, Nokia made a takeover bid for $ 8.1 billion.

In November 2007, Navteq took over MapSolute GmbH, which operated the online route planner Map24 .

On December 17, 2007, Navteq shareholders accepted a purchase offer from Nokia. On July 2, 2008, the EU approved the purchase by Nokia .

At the beginning of January 2009, Navteq took over T-Systems Traffic GmbH from T-Systems . The TMCpro provider has been operating as Navteq Services GmbH since then .

On July 1, 2011, Navteq was absorbed into the new Location & Commerce division of Nokia .

As part of a restructuring by Nokia, the closure of the Bonn and Malvern ( Pennsylvania ) locations was announced in September 2011 with the layoff of 300 employees. From the Bonn location, only the traffic jam warning service TMCpro is currently operated by Navteq Services GmbH.

Business area

Roads and other objects are digitally recorded geometrically and attributively and sold to manufacturers of navigation devices, for example in GDF format. The company currently (as of 2012) has more than 5,600 employees worldwide. NAVTEQ has 213 offices in 50 countries around the globe. These include regional headquarters in Veldhoven (Netherlands) and Gateway East (Singapore) and important global production centers in the USA, India and Eastern Europe. Most of the employees work in the 130 or so regional field offices where data is collected. These vector data serve as raw data for further processing and refinement in map series. They are used with mobile navigation systems or for PC applications. The largest competitor is the Dutch company TomTom .

Navteq began photographing a number of streets in the United States, France, and the United Kingdom in the spring of 2010. In September 2011, Stuttgart, the first city of a total of more than 30 regions in Germany, was recorded; the project should be completed in July 2013. The company publishes where further recordings are planned and offers objections for homeowners who do not want their building to be shown on the Internet.

The most important customers are the GPS receiver manufacturer Garmin , which signed a contract until 2015, and the German navigation device manufacturer Navigon .
