Map24

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Map24 one was online - directions of the German company Mapsolute. MapSolute was founded in 1996 and won one of the Webby Awards in 2004 with Map24 . In 2007 MapSolute (and with it the rights to Map24) was bought by Navteq . Map24 has been renamed to Navteq Map24 . In September 2011, Map24 was discontinued by Nokia and replaced by Nokia Maps.

Map24 was designed for use with a web browser . You couldn't just look at street maps and plan routes. It was possible to search for so-called points of interest such as places and addresses and display them on the map. The map could be moved and scaled in real time with the mouse. There were location-based information such as congestion, restaurants, petrol stations and speed cameras appears.

Since mid-October 2006, satellite and aerial images were available that could be displayed both alone and in conjunction with the map. The route planner differed from others, such as ViaMichelin or Map & Guide , in that the route was explained in full sentences and not, as with the competitors, was only described in key words. Since mid-October 2007 it has been possible to display the weather on the interactive map.

technology

Map24 stood out from its competitors in that the geographic data was not transmitted as a raster graphic , but as a vector graphic . This reduced the data volumes to be transferred. This enabled maps to be loaded faster than other providers such as Google Maps . It also made zooming into the map smoother.

In contrast to other map providers, Map24 offered a Java applet for handling and displaying the data. The Java applet could also be loaded and then offered extended functions. A flight over the planned route was just as possible as the view of the map from any angle.

Since mid-May 2006 , there was a Ajax - API , with the card integrated into other websites and can be provided with specific content.
