A road map is a thematic map that focuses on the course of the road and all important information related to road traffic . It also contains tourist information for travel and vacation planning. Road maps in the narrower sense are maps on paper, which are discussed in this article. They differ from the schematic online road maps (web maps) in the representation of the topography and a wealth of information that goes far beyond road traffic , cannot be compared with them and therefore, contrary to popular opinion, do not compete with them.

Demanding travel and tour planning is therefore still only possible with road maps made of paper, especially on a detailed scale of 1: 200,000 (see: general map ). Connoisseurs today use the advantages of both media, plan on paper maps and use a navigation system to make the trip without having to stop to read paper maps, especially today's motorcyclists.

The Tabula Peutingeriana represents the Roman road network ( viae publicae ) in the late Roman Empire from the British Isles over the Mediterranean and the Middle East to India and Central Asia .

The earliest road map of Central Europe is the Romwegkarte printed by Erhard Etzlaub on the occasion of the holy year in 1500 . The map with the title This is the Rome route from meylen to meylen with points marked from eyner stat to the other through deutzsche lands. Like all cards Etzlaubs gesüdet (south is at the top), three directions are with Sunrise, lunch and Undergang labeled. The course of the road is shown and the distances between the cities can be measured by means of points at a distance of one German mile (7.4 km).

Output form

Road maps can usually be issued as a folded map sheet (usually as part of a map series ). If the maps are spread over several sheets of paper and bound to a book , one speaks of an auto atlas .

Road maps were also often used as advertising media .

Road network

The streets as topographical objects themselves are shown differently depending on their classification and meaning. * Motorways : General map 1: 200,000: orange filling with triple lines; otherwise: triple band on the outside twice red and in the middle orange or blue double band; in non-German-speaking countries also green double band

  • Numbering of the motorway junctions , toll gates and toll motorway sections
  • Roads ( height freely and without crossing in Germany Automotive roads in Austria expressways ):

    • Single-lane (two-lane): thick red band or rarely also red double band
  • Main roads : red ribbon
  • Country roads : yellow ribbon
  • Side streets: double line with white filling

Road sections under construction or in planning are shown as a signature modification.

  • Under construction: in the same signature, but with interrupted ribbons or lines, mostly with an indication of the time of the planned completion.
  • In planning: two-lane streets: three lines, single-lane streets: two lines

Road numbering: European roads , motorways , trunk roads .

Additions to the road network

This information depends on the quality and scale of the map.

Additional tourist entries

Road maps, especially on a scale of 1: 200,000 (e.g. general map) or 1: 150,000 (Maxiatlas), contain the following entries:

Today's meaning of the road map

Contrary to popular opinion today, road maps are indispensable for individual trips for which a car or rental car is used wholly or temporarily for high demands for travel planning. Because they also contain other means of transport in addition to the road network, depending on the scale. In addition, road maps, especially on a larger (more precise) scale, offer a variety of tourist entries, such as scenic routes. If the map is already understood, street maps can serve as a source of ideas for day trips or trips and for their planning. Detailed road maps are indispensable for demanding tour planning and can be combined with electronic media (see introduction). In contrast to tourist information, road maps show the appearance of a region clearly and neutrally, and enable comparison with other regions and critical analyzes.

In mountains, especially in the Alps , for example, appropriate entries make winter sports resorts and regions visible, which, on the other hand , are less or not at all suitable for a summer or hiking holiday due to the interventions in the landscape and its deserted holiday resorts outside the ski season. However, this is usually not mentioned by the local tourist information and hotel advertising.
