George "Joie" Chitwood (born April 14, 1912 in Denison , Texas , † January 3, 1988 in Tampa Bay Florida ) was an American racing driver . Chitwood was of American Indian descent.
Career
Joie Chitwood competed seven times in the Indianapolis 500 between 1940 and 1950 . He achieved fifth place in 1946, 1949 and 1950. In 1946, however, he only drove around a quarter of the distance himself, after which he was replaced by Sam Hanks . In 1950 Tony Bettenhausen took over the wheel of his car for 51 laps. Only in 1949 did he finish the race alone. Since the race was part of the Formula 1 drivers' world championship in 1950 , he also had a Grand Prix start.
After his motorsport career ended, he founded an automobile stunt company in the 1950s . The "Joie Chitwood Thrill Show" quickly became a national institution in the USA and Chitwood was able to set several records as a stunt driver. On May 3, 1978, he set a new world record when he drove nine kilometers on two wheels in a Chevrolet Chevette .
He was also active as a stunt driver in Hollywood . His most important engagement was his work as a driver and stunt coordinator for the James Bond film Live and Let Die in 1973.
