Career
Duke Nalon's career began by accident. Nalon was part of the pit crew of the US racing driver Wally Zale in the 1930s and drove in his emergency vehicles before the races. When team boss Walter Galven was looking for a racing driver, Zale recommended Nalon to him, who took the chance and immediately won his first midget race.
Nalon, whose nickname was The Iron Duke , was part of the Chicago gang around Tony Bettenhausen and drove midget races until the end of his career. In 1938 it secured the championship title of the East Coast AAA Sprint Car series.
Nolan made his debut in the Indianapolis 500 mile race in 1938 . In 1949 and 1951 he started from pole position , his best placing was third in 1948. Since the 500-mile race from 1950 to 1960 was part of the Formula 1 World Championship , Nalon also has three starts in World Championship races in the statistics. He couldn't score any points.
