Onofre Agustín Marimón (born December 19, 1923 in Zárate , Buenos Aires , † July 31, 1954 at the Nürburgring ) was an Argentine racing car driver . It started in the 1950s a. a. in the Formula 1 world championship.

Career

Like many other Argentine racing drivers, Marimón, who was nicknamed Pinocho ( Spanish for " Pinocchio "), first stepped into the limelight at the Temporada . In the years after the Second World War, this racing series consisted of several races at the beginning of the year in South America and also offered European pilots the opportunity to train during the winter break. His opponents there included Juan Manuel Fangio and José Froilán González , although he remained friends with both of them when they had fallen out in the meantime. In 1951 he contested his first races in Europe and also started with González in the 24 Hours of Le Mans . From the 1953 Formula 1 season , he drove a Maserati . His best results include two third places, at the Belgian GP in 1953 and at the British GP in 1954, where he moved up from the last grid position caused by negligence in training with a brilliant driving performance.

At the next race, the German GP at the Nürburgring , Marimón had a fatal accident during training. Previously, when he started for the first time on this track, he had obtained detailed instructions from his established Argentinian driver colleagues in order not to fall victim to the perils of the ring. But when he braked the Wehrseifen descent, which was difficult to see, a defect caused a front wheel to lock up, causing the monoposto to hurl into the trees and bushes. Marimón died at the scene of the accident. It was the first death in a Formula 1 world championship race. In the face of shock, González and Fangio reconciled.
