André Guilhaudin (* 1924 in Montdragon ) is a former French racing driver .

Racing career

André Guilhaudin's father was an aviation technician by profession . In 1928 he took over a car workshop in Chambéry and moved there with his family. In the workshop, the young André Guilhaudin was confronted with technology and engines early on. As a 12-year-old, he built a steam engine to power a boat. During the Second World War he ran his parents' business as a teenager and one year after the end of the war, at the age of 21 and with the support of his father, he became the youngest Panhard dealer in France.

His first contact with motorsport came through a Panhard dealer friend from Grenoble who asked him to act as a co-driver at the 1948 Rallye du Mont Blanc . In the first half of the 1950s he was a regular co-driver of Jacques Rey . He was also a mechanic and vehicle engineer in one. His first assignment as a driver came by accident. At the 1956 Mille Miglia he jumped in for a sick driver and had a serious accident with the Panhard Dyna 54 , which he survived unharmed.

He celebrated his first successes as a driver in the Tour de France for automobiles . In 1959 he was eighth overall and in 1960 twelfth. In 1961 he celebrated a class win at the Monte Carlo Rally and in the same year made his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans as a works driver for Deutsch & Bonnet . He achieved his greatest successes with his friend Alain Bertaut as a racing partner. Together with him he won the Index of Performance in Le Mans in 1962 . He tied the length of his career to that of his friend. After the Reims 12-hour race in 1967 , both retired from active racing. The year before , the duo finished eleventh in the 1000 km race in Paris .
